Saturday I had a Dubuque Day with Kelly & Dan. It was my first visit to their new house and first introduction to their puppy Maureen (Mo). Aside from the excitement of these 2 firsts, I just love Dubuque and always have a great time visiting. Here are some highlights of DBQ Day:
Kelly, Dan, and I drove into Wisconsin to Cassville just to take the car ferry back over to Iowa. Along the way we saw a bald eagle by its nest - what a great start to America's weekend!
We ate lunch at Brighton's, the oldest established restaurant and bar in Iowa before taking the short walk to a great lookout over the Mississippi River Valley. Such a gorgeous day!
After a relaxing break back at the house, sipping a cool drink and lounging on the deck, we ventured back out. This trip took us to DQ (it was a hot day - we needed ice cream) and Lock and Dam #11. When we were little Grandma & Grandpa took Kelly and I on a vacation centered around the lock and dam. Needless to say, I was not a fan. I still don't find much enjoyment in the experience, but good company helps!
As I was leaving DBQ at the end of the day I remembered a tweet I'd sent earlier in the day referencing the Field of Dreams. It has been YEARS since I've been to the special site and I was in no hurry to get any where (the weather was also gorgeous and I did not mind the excuse to roll my windows down and drive back roads...) so I stopped by.
Naturally, I couldn't drive through Dyersville without also passing by the Basilica.
Finally, as if further proof were needed that I was in no rush to get anywhere, I pulled off at an exit and parked for awhile just to watch the sunset. It was stunning with the colors bouncing off of the clouds and the (aside from highway 20 nearby) gentle stillness of a country evening.
What a perfect day.
